M. Cadwell, Flatonia

Moses Cadwell, the son of Elizabeth McNary and Daniel Cadwell, was born in Griggsville, Pike County, Illinois. He and his twin brother, Aaron, were babies when the family came to Texas in 1840. Cadwell family lore tells that the twins were kidnapped by Indians during their journey.

The twins both served in the Civil War. Aaron's back was broken and caused him suffering the remainder of his life. Moses fought in the last battle of the Civil War at Palmetto Ranch near present-day Brownsville. He married Cordelia Binkley on Nov. 06 1879. Their children were Joe McNary, Jasper Binkley, Aarie, and Fred B.

Aaron Cadwell appeared on the Fayette County tax rolls in 1871. He and Moses were partnered as A.W. & M. Cadwell or Cadwell Brothers from 1872 through 1876. Moses Cadwell worked as a photographer in Flatonia until at least 1899. He is listed in the 1900 Census as a farmer. His son, Fred B. Cadwell, born in 1880, also worked as a photographer.

Another Cadwell brother, Hugh, became a doctor in Flatonia and was a partner with his son-in-law, Gus Brunnemann, in the Brunnemann Drug Store.
