Old Plum Catholic Cemetery

Also known as Saints Peter and Paul Old Catholic Cemetery

PLUM, FAYETTE COUNTY, TEXAS

Taken from Saints Peter and Paul Old Catholic Cemetery, Plum, Texas, copyrighted 1998, with the permission of the author, Norman C. Krischke.

Sts. Peter and Paul Old Catholic Cemetery was establishd in 1899 upon purchase of a parcel of land from Paul Korenek. The cemetery is located on the southern edge of the L. A. Barksdale Quarter league on Old Catholic Cemetery Lane just east of Drisdale Road one mile due north of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Plum, Texas.

The original church building was erected about 1899 at the location of the present church which was constructed in 1945. St. Jerome Parochial School was situated immediately south of the church; it is no longer in existance. A newer Catholic cemetery has been established adjacent to the church, but the old cemetery is still being kept in good condition.

For more information on the cemetery and the individuals buried in it, see Mr. Krischke's booklet at the Fayette Heritage Museum & Archives. It includes a map, numerous obituaries and notes.

According to Mr. Krischke there are 52 unknown graves in this cemetery.

From the historical marker:

Although settlement in the Plum area dates to 1869, the town formally developed in 1889. The following year, Czech families began settling here, and in 1896, they established Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. In 1899, trustees purchased an acre of land from Paul Korenek, and the earliest marked grave, for Rosi Korenek (b. 1879), dates to that year. Tombstones reflect the area's rich heritage through Czech inscriptions. Church members belonged to fraternal and service groups such as the KJT, KJZT, SPJST, Knights of Columbus and Woodmen of the World. With a backdrop of agricultural lands, much as it had at the time of its founding, the cemetery serves as a link to pioneer life in the Plum area. Historic Texas Cemetery - 2006

The Victoria Diocese also maintains a list of who is buried in the cemetery and map at http://www.vccms.org/index.php.
