Williams Creek Cemetery

FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE BLUFF CEMETERY

294945N 965239W

BLUFF, FAYETTE COUNTY, TEXAS

The Williams Creek Cemetery is located about five miles south of La Grange on Kruppa Road, originally the old La Grange - Weimar Road. Today there are over two hundred graves in this well kept cemetery.

The following information and the cemetery listing below was taken from Williams Creek Cemetery, written in 1974 and updated in 1997 by Norman C. Krischke:

. . . Prior to the establishment of the cemetery, the local people buried their dead on their own land. When the cemetery was designated, some remains were moved from the farm and placed in the new burial grounds. Peter and Rosina Laux, Gustav A. Mensing, Theodor Merrem, Alma Merrem, George T. Fietsam, Klara J. Fietsam, and Friederike Hinze were moved from the home place to the cemetery. One or more of these graves could have been moved to the cemetery . . . before June 1881, but the first known burial was that of Alfred Munke who died 11 Jun 1881.

A cemetery association was formed and its bylaws were adopted 12 Jan 1879. The organization was known as the Bluff Cemetery Association with Carl Otto, Jr. serving as first President and Joseph Fietsam as first Secretary-Treasurer. [The association paid Hugo Lueders fifty dollars for 2 and 86/100 acres in the northeast corner of Block 81 of Fayette County School Land. The deed was dated July 22, 1879.] The Bluff Cemetery Association Minute Book has a sketch of the cemetery on the inside front cover which was probably drawn by Joseph Fietsam.

item No. 3 of the bylaws states: "One lot shall sell for $5.00, one-half lot for $3.00, 1 grave space for $1.50 and 1 grave space "on Public Burial Ground" shall sell for $1.00". Lots were allocated by lottery. Lot No. 4 was purchased 12 Sep 1879 by Paul Nordhausen. . . .

The name of the cemetery was changed in 1912. The word "Bluff" referred to a very large area prior to 1900. By 1912 the word "Bluff" applied only to Monument Hill. The president of the association felt that it would no longer be appropriate to retain the name for the cemetery since Bluff was several miles away. A meeting was called at the Joe Hausmann Store and the members voted to change the name to Williams Creek Cemetery after the nearby Williams Creek. [Brewton]

The cemetery is bounded by a concrete post - woven wire fence with a double main gate with arch on the west side, a small walk-in gate centered on the south side and a large secondary entrance-exit gate at the southeast corner. There is an old outhouse and tool shed outside of the enclosure at the northwest corner. . . .

A copy of Mr. Krischke's booklet which contains additional information can be found at the Fayette Heritage Archives and Museum in La Grange.
